Margot Scullen

Viola

Margot has been a member with the Rocky Mountain Symphony Orchestra for several years and enjoys bringing orchestral music to communities both inside and out of Calgary. She has over 30 years of experience playing in professional and amateur orchestras and currently plays regularly with groups in Calgary including St. Giles Orchestra, the Civic Symphony and as a freelance musician. She has played with a variety of orchestras in British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Japan, and Germany. Margot studied with Dr. Howard Leyton-Brown (former concertmaster of the London Symphony and in the lineage of Carl Flesch) at the Regina Conservatory. Originally (and still) a violin player, she first took up viola in university when the orchestra was in need of extra alto players and never looked back. She loves how the violas intersect melodically with both the violins and the celli/bassi, providing the lush middle ground of the string section. Her favourite configuration is string quartet, and she enjoys exploring works by lesser-known composers, especially the emerging and increasing offerings of women composers.
