Matthew Hicks
Cello
Matthew was born in Calgary into a musical family, gifting him both a love for music as well as an ear for it, guiding him to take up the cello to form a piano trio with his parents. (His mother, Diana Piggott, sits across the stage in the second violins!) With other RMSO members, he plays with the Amadea Strings ensemble. He has been playing with the RMSO since season 2 and enjoys playing a variety of music from baroque to metal. He is also a bass, singing as a section lead with the Calgary Bach Chorus and the choir of Christ Church, Elbow Park, and has sung with Luminous Voices, Il Sono Men's Chorus, and others. When he isn't painting with sound, he paints with light as a professional photographer. Because everybody needs at least 3 passions, you can also find him in the basement building a faithful recreation of CP Rail in the Kootenays, circa 1972. He also believes strongly in environmental sustainability, and you may catch a glimpse of him around town or enroute to Polaris on a bicycle with a cello on his back!
