RMSO Founder Kim Raffin Nominated for Prestigious Patron of the Arts Award
The Rocky Mountain Symphony Orchestra (RMSO) is thrilled to announce that its founding President and Board Chair, Kim Raffin, has been nominated for the Mayor's Night of the Arts 2025 - Patron of the Arts Award. This prestigious recognition celebrates individuals or businesses that have significantly enhanced the arts community through philanthropy, volunteerism, and advocacy.
Kim Raffin’s journey as a patron of the arts is marked by dedication, vision, and a tireless commitment to cultural enrichment. Over the past eight years, Kim has made unparalleled contributions to the arts in Airdrie and the surrounding areas, ensuring that live orchestral music and diverse artistic opportunities thrive in our community.
A Legacy of Leadership and Philanthropy
Kim’s leadership in founding the Rocky Mountain Symphony Orchestra Society transformed a group of musicians into a vibrant, semi-professional orchestra that now performs 10–12 concerts annually across Southern Alberta. Beyond the RMSO, Kim’s vision led to the creation of the Polaris Theatre for the Performing Arts—a state-of-the-art facility near Balzac that serves as a cultural hub for artists, audiences, and learners.
Through personal donations exceeding $250,000 and a $5 million investment in the Polaris Theatre, Kim has demonstrated unwavering support for the arts. These contributions have funded everything from legal fees and musician wages to innovative programs like the "Polaris Prize," which supports emerging performers by providing professionally-produced audition recordings.
Advocacy and Community Engagement
Kim’s impact extends far beyond financial generosity. His advocacy for the arts has raised awareness, fostered accessibility, and inspired public participation in cultural activities. By emphasizing inclusion and professional development, he has supported musicians from diverse backgrounds, including newcomers fleeing war-torn regions, ensuring their integration into the RMSO and the broader arts community.
Through initiatives such as establishing a balanced governance structure within the RMSO and championing development opportunities for emerging musicians, Kim has created a sustainable legacy that will benefit Airdrie’s arts community for years to come.
Looking Ahead
As the RMSO approaches its 10th anniversary, this nomination is a testament to the transformative power of Kim Raffin’s leadership and vision. The entire RMSO family congratulates Kim on this well-deserved recognition and thanks him for his enduring contributions to the cultural vitality of our region.
